life's changes rarely match our desires. that which we want to last forever doesn't; that which we wish would change doesn't - at least not in the way we want. this is the root of suffering. this, perhaps, is as close to an absolute truth as i can think.
that is only part of the story, though. the other part is that beauty, miracles surround us 24/7 if we are aware enough to see them. be thankful for the good you have experienced, the good you are experiencing and the good you will experience.

dreamt i was in a short track speed skating race with the US team. apolo anton ohno won (of course). i fininshed about seventh. i was pretty happy given i've never raced before and was wearing what i normally do when i skate - incl. hockey skates....
i think i'm going to check out a local speedskating club next week. i am sure that's what brought the dream on...

daily buddhist thought - beliefnet
All the faults of our mind – our selfishness, ignorance, anger, attachment, guilt, and other disturbing thoughts – are temporary, not permanent and everlasting. And since the cause of our suffering – our disturbing thoughts and obscurations – is temporary, our suffering is also temporary.
-Lama Zopa Rinpoche, "Ultimate Healing:
