ok - fairly eventful weekend, so far. after a few days of feeling better, i am feeling crappy again - different symptoms though. so today, after finishing my paper (first draft - i am talking w/my prof about publishing it), i decided to just chill - read nick hornby's songbook, rest, listen to let it be naked (that is, for those of you who don't know, a resissue of the beatles classic minus phil spector's production (i.e. bare or naked) - i remained fully clothed), and generally hanging out. i also had my first alcoholic drink in about 6 months - tea w/honey and whiskey - of course that doesn't count as it was strictly for medicinal purposes...

yesterday, we got a good chunk of christmas shopping done and following a tradition started when i was a wee lad, got stuff for myself, including the aforementioned hornby book and let it be naked 9same disclaimer applies), while lunching at the cafe tandoor (curry navaratana - my fave there - except w/tofu instead of my usual paneer (not sure which i prefer - prob paneer, but both are great)) in walked cleveland cavaliers center 7' 3" zydrunas ilgauskas. i am a pretty tall guy (6' 3") so it is rare i run into someone who towers over me.

i like let it be naked (you know the drill) i've seen mixed reviews of it, but the rawer feel works for me...

btw - with my new love of iTunes, i may have to make a mix cd - sounds like fun and if nothing else, will help me pay my mix cd debt to david, although i am sure my tastes are very mainstream compared to his. i'm in the mood for a beat the winter mix - so first choice is marvin gaye's "got to give it up" and perhaps some stevie wonder...we'll see if this come to fruition or if it is just the toddy talking...

Yahoo! News - Some Britons Shocked at Queen's Decor

i am no fan of the monarchy, but if i were the queen, i'd have the peasants thrown in the dungeon or something. what good is it being queen if you can't throw cheeky peasants in the dungeon.

i have often found that some of my best lectures occur when i scrap what i have prepared and either respond to a student question of in a flight of whimsy go off on some relevant tangent...last night's lecture (when i was feeling as miserable as i have in ages) is an example...

on the other hand, did a similar thing today, changed gears midstream and fell flat on my face(how's that for a mixed metaphor)

some days you eat the bear, some days the bear eats you...

on the positive side, i woke up feeling a lot better this AM, although, i am starting to feel tired and ache-y. at least today is a short day, and i'm done for the week. i intentionally made sure i had no appts today or tomorrow, so i can crash - or possibly, go christmas shopping...

while i am waiting for visual studio to install, i am skimming a favorite book of mine: The Book of Tea by Kakuzo Okakura

argh!

why is this cd available as an import only?

argh!

npm is one of the most creative musicians going - one of the few who, imho, is playing jazz in a creative, innovative way and not just repeating the ways of the past (as great as they were) it may be sacrilege, but npm is perhaps the new miles...

btw, he plays on the laswell cd i dloaded yest....and am still groovin' to (do people still groove anymore?)

i have a headache today.
blech.

The Church Sign Generator rocks very much!

i am fascinated by church signs and alternately apalled, bemused and annoyed at what they say. that being said, i did see a great one recently: "most of us keep one eye on the temptation we pray to be delivered from."

i have become obsessed with fire - not in a scary, pyromaniac kind of way, but enjoying building and tending to one in our outdoor fireplace. no wonder people talk of the mystique of stories around the campfire. the sound, the smell and the warmth are all wonderful. it must touch a chord with primal feelings or something. it's a challenge to start it, cultivate it and keep it going. of course, for me, it is a meditative activity only - if i don't succeed, i can run into the warm house. it does make me think of the time when this was an essential activity. in an odd way, it makes me feel in touch with the earth - kind of a camping trip without leaving the yard.
