war notes:
- reports out of baghdad indicate that the mob did NOT tear down a statue of saddam, but instead tore down a statue of a body double of saddam
[forget the source] - U.S. KILLS SADDAM FOUR MORE TIMES
Pledges to Continue Killing Him Until Regime is Gone
Following through on its stated objective of regime change, the U.S. today killed Saddam Hussein "at least four more times," according to Central Command in Qatar.
"By repeatedly killing Saddam Hussein, we are sending him a clear message: you are losing grip on power," Brigadier General Vincent Brooks told reporters at the daily CENTCOM briefing.
General Brooks said that the decision to kill Saddam four more times today was motivated by "credible human intelligence" that pinpointed the Iraqi strongman in four different fortified bunkers.
Once the U.S. had the coordinates of the bunkers, it responded by dropping a total of eighty-nine bunker-busting bombs on the targets of opportunity, killing Saddam at least four times - and possibly more, General Brooks indicated.
But the fact that the U.S. had succeeded in killing Saddam four more times today does not mean that it will let up on its offensive, General Brooks warned.
"We will continue killing Saddam Hussein until his regime is finished," General Brooks said.
In related news, a ninety-foot statue of Saddam Hussein turned up on eBay today, the auction site revealed.
The leading bidder for the mustachioed behemoth was Cole McFarland, owner of a dog-racing track on the outskirts of Worcester, Massachusetts.
"Don't get me wrong, I'm no fan of Saddam Hussein," Mr. McFarland said. "But this thing is going to put my dog track on the map."
Told of Mr. McFarland's purchase, General Brooks said that U.S. forces would follow the statue to Worcester and tear it down yet again.
"Our message to Saddam is simple: we will keep killing you and tearing down your statues until further notice," General Brooks said.

3. What's your favorite song?
wow - too many to list. here's a couple: i am the ressurection:stone roses, lonestar:norah jones:clocks, coldplay:death or glory,the clash:sneaky feelings,elvis costello
didn't i post this a few weeks ago...
4. If you could play any instrument, what would it be?
guitar - hands down - tried to learn but couldn't quite get the hang of it. too much to think about.
5. If you could meet any musical icon (past or present), who would it be and why?
joni mitchell - i know all great artists are unique - but she strikes me as the uniquest1
1note to any grammar geeks: i know that saying one thing is "more" unique is, strictly speaking, incorrect. something is unique or it isn't. take the time you were going to spend correcting me and go for a walk outside or something...

i am not really a history buff, but i stumbled across the historic new york times web site while i was looking for something else. the site is scanning historical issues of the new york times and putting them online. for example, read what nyt had to say about lincoln's election
between the class i teach and the class i take, i went for a nice skate at a nearby metropark. it's amazing that the distance, which wiped me out not that long ago, is a nice little between class skate now. fairly cool and breezy - nice day to be outside. this is a park where a baby squirrel once limbed onto my skate boot and would not go *insert joke here*
i hope i am not too malodorous for the class i take - in case we have any group projects
*random thought*1
these rock!
1don't ask me why i designate this specifically as a random thought - isn't my whole blog random thoughts?

bbc6 is playing samples from yo la tengo's newest cd, summer sun
based on the 5 or 6 30 second samples, it sounds great. what a prolific band - i became aware of them from reading david and sharon and perhaps other blogs. and i've picked up some recordings from them, but they have a bunch and i'm starting to think their goal is to get me to blow my retirement savings. anyhow this one sounds like one to get...
that being said, i've noticed since i've started blogging, but never previously commented, that many bloggers contain links to their wish list on amazon - am i supposed to buy everyone presents, or something? anyone who has their wish list posted: does this work? maybe i'll have to try and find a rich reader to buy me things to supplement my modest instructor's salary. maybe other folks blogs are read by folks they know as opposed to mine which is read (mainly) by strangers...
even more puzzling is the paypal link - i'm totally flattered that anyone in the world stops by to read what i have to say for free - but would never expect anyone to pay anything - perhaps i ought to have a reverse paypal link - one that would pay folks FOR reading me...

for the next 5 minutes i will post all the answers i can think of:
- because it's there
- why ask why
- if you can't be a tree, be a branch, but be the best little branch in the forest
- because i can, can, can, can, can
- why not
- for personal reasons
- beats whatever else i'd be doing instead
- i owe it to my readers
- i owe it to myself
- someone has to
- i am jealous of this guy
- i really didn't plan on it, just found myself at the computer bored much of the day
- anything you can do, i can do better
- more is more
- quantity over quality
- supersize it

our young, dumb cat killed a small bird and chaos ensued in our house. i think my older daughter thought it was kind of cool. but my younger daughter (a likely future vegetarian) was very upset, saying that he was mean to kill a baby bird like that. so, it was up to me, a vegetarian, to explain how he wasn't mean, that's just what cats do, they have the hunting instinct and even though we feed him, the instinct is still there etc...
i didn't tell her the other half of the story, cause it wasn't the time or place. that we, as humans, might have a similar instinct, but the gift of humanity is that we can transcend our instincts and use our brains to maybe find a way to feed ourselves that is better for us, better for the animals and better for the planet. but she's a bright girl, she'll figure that out on her own, i bet.

antologia by madresdeus part 3...
couldn't have said it better myself: "When a band is so distinct, different and damnably unique, what you gonna do? Well, falling down on your knees and thanking Deus for the voice of Teresa Salgueiro would be a fine start." - Time Out

the interesting thing about the antologia cd by madresdeus is i find it as moving as any music i've heard recently and i don't understand a word.
in a previous post, i talked about the cd, antologia by madresdeus. it arrived today from amazon. i know nothing about the band, except they are portuguese and i believe this cd is an anthology.
it is among the most beautiful music i've heard - the singer has an unbelievable voice - check it out if you want to hear something different...
perhaps a more complete review to follow after i've heard it a few times - right now, i'm just soaking it in...

bbc6 is playing a different mix of an absolutely fabulous ( ab fab?) song - cornershop's brimful of asha
this is a great tribute to indian film playback singer asha bhosle - and by extension a tribute to the cinema, pop music and the need for folks to take refuge in something - now more than ever. really cool, i think, when someone writes about something really specific, yet, it is clear their meaning is to go beyond the ostensible meaning of the song - i think that's called a metaphor or something...
ah - now they are playing fatboy slim's rockafeller skank which, i am sure, quite the opposite, means less than it seems...

today is the 1 year anniversary of the start of my blog. of all the benefits of blogging the sense of community (incl. making/keeping contact with those i otherwise might not have been able to) is the best part. uh - that means you. thanks!
i thought of something last night that i needed to do, and for the life of me, i can't recall what it is. argh. i only have one class today and i think i am completely prepared for it, so i doubt whatever it is, it needs to be done today - so i guess if it was important, i'll recall it eventually...
also, i'm wearing a green shirt and brown pants - going for the tree look today...
