i worked with a trasnlator for the first time today. we had a group of people from russia touring the USA stop at our college for a presentation on business; i presented the IT section. i did not realize until today that there would be an interpreter. it was a great experience. it did take a minute getting used to pausing and waithing for the interpreter to translate. also, when someone asked a question, i had to resist the urge to look at the interpreter, and instead to look at whover asked. russian is a beautiful sounding language. all in all, a good experience.

two years ago today i was laid off. i still get pissed despite if i had never been laid off i might not have had the guts to make the career change i wanted and would have never:
a. gotten to work at nasa
b. pursued a master's
c. found a job i love for the first time (as opposed to merely liking)

Wired News: E-Mail From the Great Beyond

in case you want your last words to be more one bad joke...

trivia question: one of my favorite paintings is marchel duchamp's L.H.O.O.Q. (see below)

What does the title (L.H.O.O.Q.) mean? it's actually part of the reason i like it...along with the general irreverence...

marcel duchamp's painting l.h.o.o.q.

Wired News | WHO Launches Global Fruit-And-Vegetable Campaign

the dullest blog in the world is back! woo hoo!!!

kristin challenged me to write a haiku about monday. always up for a challenge, here goes:

monday haiku

were monday a place,
a putrid place it would be,
where no one would go.

i want to win the mini cooper in the hershey's contest. as many of their candy bars of theirs i eat, they oughta give me one...

imagine how cool i'd be tooling around in a mini-cooper - er - i mean even cooler than i already am (quoth the outkast, "what's cooler than cool? ice cold!")

of course, i'd settle for a t-shirt..

an ugly, painful bruise i got friday moving furniture is getting uglier and more painful.

if it weren't monday, i'd write a haiku about it.

shopping trip blues haikus

who would have thought it?
shopping for computer desk
marital strife source.

flat screen monitor.
i really really want one.
too bad kids must eat.

always wear same pants.
too wide, too short, too narrow.
guess target can't help!

my ed psych prof read us, a few weeks back, shel silverstein's "the missing piece" as a fun way to demonstrate some teaching techniques. i had been vaguely aware of him my kids have a couple of his books and i vaguely remember seeing his cartoons while taking a break from the -uh - articles in playboy (did you know he wrote "a boy named sue" AND dr. hook's "cover of the rolling stone" - genius)

anyhow, i raided our library - his poetry is great...
also, got a book about automotive haiku's titled HONKU which is fun....

in that spirit, as well as the spirit of my recent baba ghanouj haiku...

xbox haiku

freddy fender sings,
"wasted days and wasted nights".
must own an xbox.

thanks to sharon, i've signed up on friendster - an intriguing concept. if anyone else has signed up, look me up

my latest video game obsession is ultimate beach soccer. it's weird, on paper it's not that great of a game, but you know, you don't play these games on paper. and given the ridiculous amount of time i've spent on it (not to mention the celebrations when i score a goal, or the upset with a bad ref's call) means it must have something going - game-wise...
